NCC Statisticss – Nigeria’s Active Mobile Phone Subscriptions Hits 198.1 million

TechTV can report that Active telephony subscriptions in Nigeria increased to 198,123,431 million as at March 2022, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) statistics have shown.

NCC’s records indicate that telephony subscriptions stood at 198,123,431 in February 2022 which is an increase by 624,403 when compared to January 2022’s 197,499,028 telephony subscriptions.

These are according to the latest ‘Industry Statistics’ on NCC’s website as at March 29 2022.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), led by Professor Umar Danbatta, the Executive Vice Chairman and CEO, said the reports are released based on the Section 89 Subsection 3(d) of the Nigerian Communications Act 2003 (NCA 2003), which mandates the Commission to ‘monitor and report on the state of the Nigerian telecommunications industry, provide statistical analyses and identify industry trends with regard to services, tariffs, operators, technology, subscribers, issues of competition and dominance, etc. with a view to identifying areas where regulatory intervention would be needed;

“In view of this, the Commission regularly conducts studies and surveys and produces reports on the telecommunications industry, and telecommunications operators are obligated, under the terms of the licenses, to provide the NCC with such data on a regular basis for analytical review and publishing”.

Meanwhile, the country’s Teledensity in the period under review shows that the country has reached 103.79% teledensity.

The section that contains the sum total of all active telephony subscribers and teledensity as calculated on monthly and annual basis defines Teledensity as the number of active telephone connections per one hundred (100) inhabitants living within an area and is expressed as a percentage figure.

From March 2019, teledensity is calculated based on a population estimate of 190 million, up from 140 million.

In terms of Percentage (%) Market Share by Technology, the NCC report shows that 99.80 per cent of the subscribers are utilizing telecommunications services through the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM).

The mobile Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) now accounts for Zero per cent share of the market; fixed wireless has 0.10 percent, the same as Voice of IP (VoIP) 0.10%.
