Seplat Energy Ramps Up Gas Supply to Address Nigeria’s Energy Challenges

Seplat Energy Plc, a leading indigenous energy company listed on both the Nigerian Exchange and the London Stock Exchange, has announced a significant expansion of its gas infrastructure, targeting a gas supply capacity of 850 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd). This strategic move is a bold step in tackling Nigeria’s persistent energy poverty and supporting the country’s economic development through reliable energy access.

The infrastructure upgrade includes investments in new processing facilities, pipeline expansions, and enhanced distribution networks, enabling Seplat to deliver more gas to power generation companies, industrial users, and other key sectors of the Nigerian economy.

Mr. Samson Ezugworie, Chief Operating Officer of Seplat Energy, revealed that the company’s gas installations, which support domestic users across the nation, exclude the capacity from assets recently acquired from Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited (MPNU). He emphasized that Seplat’s ongoing expansion will further enhance the supply of gas to power homes and industries across Nigeria.

“We’ve installed over 850MMscfd of gas capacity, with new opportunities arising from the MPNU acquisition, which we plan to utilize to power Nigeria’s future growth,” Ezugworie said.
In addition to this, Ezugworie highlighted Seplat’s commitment to sustainability, with a focus on environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG). He noted the company’s long-term vision, which prioritizes capacity development and building sustainable pipelines of talent.

“This month, 50 new graduates began employment with Seplat, reflecting our commitment to developing talent that will lead our industry in the future,” Ezugworie added.
The company has also made strides in reducing emissions through its End of Routine Flaring (EORF) initiatives, with a particular focus on its Sapele Integrated Gas Plant. At full capacity, the plant will significantly reduce Scope 1 emissions. Other flare-out projects like Western Asset Flares Out and Oben LPG Project are ongoing.

Nigeria continues to face major challenges in energy access, with millions of households and businesses lacking reliable electricity. Natural gas, as a cleaner and more efficient alternative to other fossil fuels, is central to Seplat’s strategy for bridging this gap while enabling a just energy transition.

The expanded capacity will also support the Federal Government’s Decade of Gas initiative, aimed at making gas the centerpiece of Nigeria’s energy future.
