The Lagos State Government has partnered with MTN Nigeria to redevelop the Obalende under-bridge into a modern, regulated transport hub to be known as the Y’ELLO Bus Park.
The project will feature solar-powered lighting, CCTV surveillance, and a structured transport terminal, marking a major upgrade of what was previously a degraded and unsafe public space.
The development was disclosed on Tuesday by Tokunbo Wahab, Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, who said the initiative aligns with the state’s broader effort to reclaim public infrastructure and improve urban order.
“This redevelopment will convert what was once a notorious and degraded space into a functional, secure, and community-centred facility,” Wahab said in a post on X.
Cleaning Up and Reclaiming Public Spaces
According to the commissioner, the Obalende project is part of the Lagos government’s ongoing clean-sweep strategy, aimed at eliminating criminal activity, informal transport chaos, and environmental degradation across the state.
Once completed, the Y’ELLO Bus Park is expected to be functional, safe, and environmentally sustainable, while meeting the daily transport needs of commuters in one of Lagos’ busiest corridors.
What the Y’ELLO Bus Park Will Offer
Wahab revealed that the new facility has been designed with a focus on safety, health, sustainability, and aesthetics. Key features include:
Solar-powered street lighting to improve night-time visibility and eliminate blind spots
Solar-powered CCTV cameras to monitor activity, deter crime, and improve security
A regulated transport terminal to organise bus operations and reduce congestion
“In line with our commitment to climate responsibility, the project includes the installation of solar panels to support long-term energy efficiency and reduce carbon footprint,” Wahab added.
Additional facilities planned for the park include:
Over 60 public toilet fixtures
Kiosks and commuter amenities
A recycling drop-off station to discourage illegal dumping
A road camp for LAWMA sweepers and security agencies
A biodigester system for wastewater management
Tree planting to improve air quality and enhance the environment
Part of a Wider Security Push
The Y’ELLO Bus Park forms part of a broader push by Lagos State to strengthen security and infrastructure management across key public assets.
Recently, the Federal Government, in partnership with the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), commissioned a ₦40 billion CCTV control centre for the Third Mainland Bridge.
The facility, designed to monitor traffic, enforce speed limits, and reduce accidents, is equipped with:
A 300KVA transformer
Backup power generators
240 solar panels and 10 inverters to ensure 24-hour surveillance
Together, these projects highlight a growing emphasis on technology-driven urban management, public safety, and cleaner transport infrastructure in Lagos.
