The University of Lagos (UNILAG) and the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deliver internationally recognised UK degree programmes in Nigeria, marking a significant milestone in the country’s growing push for transnational education (TNE).
Under the agreement, the University of Birmingham will establish a Transnational Education Unit at UNILAG, with plans to commence the delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes from 2027.
The partnership is expected to expand access to high-quality global education within Nigeria, reduce the cost burden associated with overseas study, and strengthen academic collaboration between Nigerian and UK institutions.
By embedding UK degree programmes locally, the initiative aligns with Nigeria’s broader education and human capital development agenda, while also positioning UNILAG as a regional hub for internationally accredited higher education.
The collaboration will leverage UNILAG’s established academic infrastructure and local expertise, alongside the University of Birmingham’s global reputation and curriculum standards, ensuring graduates receive qualifications that meet UK and international benchmarks.
Education stakeholders say the agreement reflects a growing shift toward cross-border degree delivery, as countries seek to retain talent, limit brain drain, and enhance workforce readiness in a globalised economy.
