Galaxy Backbone Limited (GBB), Nigeria’s leading ICT infrastructure and shared services provider to the Federal Government, has reaffirmed the availability, maturity, and continued expansion of the Federal Government’s official email infrastructure, widely known as GOVMAIL.
GOVMAIL is a secure, centralized communication platform designed for use by Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to facilitate professional, auditable, and efficient correspondence across all arms of government.
The platform was formally launched by the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, led by Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack, as part of a broader public service digital transformation agenda aimed at modernizing workflows and significantly reducing reliance on paper-based communication and fragmented external email services.
From 100,000 to 150,000 Active Accounts
In late 2025, the Head of the Civil Service announced that over 100,000 official GOVMAIL accounts had been created for civil servants across federal MDAs under an expanding paperless policy.
Today, that number has grown to over 150,000 active official government email accounts, currently in use by workers across MDAs nationwide — reflecting a scaled transition toward secure digital communication at the federal level.
Secure, Sovereign Digital Infrastructure
Galaxy Backbone affirmed that all GOVMAIL accounts operate within a protected sovereign government domain environment, hosted on secure local infrastructure and supported by enterprise-grade cybersecurity architecture.
The platform supports centralized identity management and ensures compliance with national data protection standards, reinforcing:
Accountability
Audit-trail visibility
Secure inter-agency communication
Improved digital governance efficiency
Backbone of Nigeria’s Public Digital Infrastructure
Beyond GOVMAIL, Galaxy Backbone operates critical national digital infrastructure including:
Secure Tier III and Tier IV Data Centres
A robust National Fibre Backbone
A Security Operations Centre (SOC)
A Network Operations Centre (NOC)
These systems collectively power mission-critical government digital services and align closely with the Federal Government’s digital economy strategy, aimed at deepening service delivery, transparency, and operational efficiency across MDAs.
Closing the Gaps
To accelerate adoption, GBB is collaborating with MDAs to ensure that every government worker required to have an official email account is onboarded within the shortest possible timeframe.
The coordinated effort reflects a shared commitment to equipping public servants with the digital tools necessary for responsive, efficient, and secure communication across agencies.
Commitment to Digital Governance
Galaxy Backbone reiterated its commitment to sustaining and expanding the GOVMAIL platform while supporting collaborative engagements across the various arms of government.
The company expressed appreciation for the strong institutional emphasis on digital governance and affirmed its readiness to provide technical clarifications and support initiatives that advance Nigeria’s digital public service ecosystem.
