Seplat Energy Ramps Up Gas Supply to Address Nigeria’s Energy Challenges

Seplat Energy Plc, a leading indigenous energy company listed on both the Nigerian Exchange and the London Stock Exchange, has announced a significant expansion of its gas infrastructure, targeting a gas supply capacity of 850 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd). This strategic move is a bold step in tackling Nigeria’s persistent energy poverty and supporting the country’s economic development through reliable energy access.

The infrastructure upgrade includes investments in new processing facilities, pipeline expansions, and enhanced distribution networks, enabling Seplat to deliver more gas to power generation companies, industrial users, and other key sectors of the Nigerian economy.

Mr. Samson Ezugworie, Chief Operating Officer of Seplat Energy, revealed that the company’s gas installations, which support domestic users across the nation, exclude the capacity from assets recently acquired from Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited (MPNU). He emphasized that Seplat’s ongoing expansion will further enhance the supply of gas to power homes and industries across Nigeria.

“We’ve installed over 850MMscfd of gas capacity, with new opportunities arising from the MPNU acquisition, which we plan to utilize to power Nigeria’s future growth,” Ezugworie said.
In addition to this, Ezugworie highlighted Seplat’s commitment to sustainability, with a focus on environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG). He noted the company’s long-term vision, which prioritizes capacity development and building sustainable pipelines of talent.

“This month, 50 new graduates began employment with Seplat, reflecting our commitment to developing talent that will lead our industry in the future,” Ezugworie added.
The company has also made strides in reducing emissions through its End of Routine Flaring (EORF) initiatives, with a particular focus on its Sapele Integrated Gas Plant. At full capacity, the plant will significantly reduce Scope 1 emissions. Other flare-out projects like Western Asset Flares Out and Oben LPG Project are ongoing.

Nigeria continues to face major challenges in energy access, with millions of households and businesses lacking reliable electricity. Natural gas, as a cleaner and more efficient alternative to other fossil fuels, is central to Seplat’s strategy for bridging this gap while enabling a just energy transition.

The expanded capacity will also support the Federal Government’s Decade of Gas initiative, aimed at making gas the centerpiece of Nigeria’s energy future.

Key Highlights:

  • Target gas processing and supply capacity: 850MMscfd

  • Support for Nigeria’s Decade of Gas policy

  • Investments in infrastructure for power generation and industrial use

  • Contribution to energy security and economic growth

Seplat Energy continues to prioritize sustainability, innovation, and partnerships to drive transformative impact across Nigeria’s energy value chain.

Meta has announced a series of new steps aimed at reducing spammy content on Facebook, as part of a broader push to improve the Feed experience and support creators who create and share original engaging content. These updates are designed to ensure that people see fresh, relevant posts while limiting the visibility and monetisation of content that attempts to manipulate distribution or engagement. Speaking about the update, Oluwasola Obagbemi, Head of Communications for Sub-Saharan Africa at Meta said, “We’ve heard from users that Facebook Feed doesn’t always surface fresh and engaging content that people enjoy, and spammy posts often crowd out authentic voices. Our goal is to continue creating an environment where creators who invest in meaningful content are recognised and rewarded. These changes are part of our long-term investment in making Facebook a platform where creators can grow and people can connect through high-quality content.” Key updates include: Lower visibility for spammy content: Spam networks that create hundreds of accounts to share the same content will now face reduced reach. Accounts that flood the platform with duplicate posts, irrelevant captions, or excessive hashtags will not be eligible for monetisation and will see decreased visibility in their Feed. Stronger enforcement against fake engagement and impersonation: Meta is scaling its efforts to detect and remove fake accounts and pages coordinating engagement or impersonating others. In 2024 alone, the platform removed over 100 million fake pages engaging in scripted follows abuse and more than 23 million impersonating accounts on Facebook. In addition to automated identity checks, features have been added to Moderation Assist, Facebook’s comment management tool, to detect and auto-hide comments from people potentially using a fake identity. Creators will also be able to report impersonators directly in the comments. Meta is also testing a comments feature so people can signal ones that are irrelevant or don’t fit the spirit of the conversation. More protection for creators and support for original content: Meta continues to enhance Rights Manager to help creators protect their original content. It also offers updated guidance to help creators succeed by sharing authentic and engaging content on Facebook.
