In a landmark educational innovation, New Horizons Nigeria has become the first institution in the country to integrate Chinese (Mandarin) into its ICT curriculum as an elective, positioning Nigerian students for relevance and competitiveness in an increasingly China-influenced global economy.
New Horizons Nigeria is a leading ICT training and solutions provider committed to equipping individuals and institutions with future-ready digital skills. Through innovative programmes, global partnerships, and strategic foresight, the organisation continues to redefine education, workforce development, and global competitiveness.
With over 80 per cent of global consumer products manufactured in China, and the country’s growing dominance across global supply chains and labour markets, New Horizons Nigeria says Mandarin proficiency is rapidly becoming a critical competitive advantage for the next generation of technology professionals.
As global economic power dynamics evolve, the labour market is increasingly tilting towards China, making the ability to understand, speak, and engage with the Chinese language and culture an essential skill for future professionals.
According to Mr Tim Akano, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of New Horizons Systems Solutions Limited, the initiative goes far beyond language acquisition.
“Very soon, the global labour market will increasingly reflect China’s influence rather than the predominantly Western orientation we see today,” Akano said. “Language will be a major differentiator, and the first generation of Chinese-speaking technology experts in Nigeria will enjoy a significant advantage—especially in integrating into Chinese companies operating locally and globally.”
Mandarin Scholarship and China Advancement Opportunity
As part of the initiative, New Horizons Nigeria has launched a Mandarin Scholarship Programme with China Advancement Opportunity, selecting 100 outstanding students from five prominent Nigerian secondary schools.
The programme represents a major milestone in Nigeria–China educational cooperation and reflects a forward-looking response to shifting global economic realities.
The scholarship begins with an intensive three-month online Mandarin training programme. At the end of this phase, students will be assessed strictly on merit. From this pool, 20 top-performing students will receive additional scholarships valued at $2,500 per student to participate in a one-year pre-degree Mandarin and cultural immersion programme in China.
Outstanding participants from this group will subsequently qualify for fully funded admission scholarships into top universities in China. The initiative is designed not only to build language proficiency, but also to enhance global competence, cultural intelligence, and international exposure.
Academic Standards and Participation Requirements
To maintain international academic standards, participating schools are required to meet strict compliance guidelines, including:
Joining online classes at least 10 minutes early
Maintaining a minimum 85 per cent attendance
Ensuring stable internet connectivity, reliable power supply, and a conducive learning environment
School owners and administrators have been congratulated and encouraged to nominate their most disciplined and committed students, as advancement into the China programme will be entirely merit-based.
Expanded Access and Executive Mandarin Training
Beyond students, international business professionals are also encouraged to enrol in New Horizons’ Mandarin Executive Lessons, designed to equip participants with practical Chinese language skills to enhance business communication and cross-border engagement.
While the pilot phase involves selected secondary schools—including Startrite School, Lightway School, British Nigerian Academy, Honeyland Schools, and Great Heights School—the Mandarin programme will be rolled out as an elective ICT course across all New Horizons retail centres nationwide.
This expansion is aimed at extending access beyond partner schools, ensuring that within one year, committed learners can communicate effectively in Mandarin—opening doors to global employment, trade, and cultural exchange.
Cultural Exchange and Celebration
The programme will culminate in a Mandarin Cultural Fiesta, bringing together educators, students, institutional partners, and distinguished guests from Nigeria and China. The event will celebrate academic excellence, cross-cultural exchange, and the strengthening of bilateral educational ties.
