The Federal Government has approved the rollout of a biometric passenger identity verification system, known as VPASS, across domestic airports in Nigeria to strengthen security and improve passenger identification.

The announcement was made by Festus Keyamo, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, as part of ongoing reforms to enhance transparency, efficiency, and accountability in the aviation sector.

VPASS to Introduce Contactless Passenger Screening

According to the Minister, the VPASS system will deploy contactless biometric verification, ensuring that all passengers are properly identified before boarding.

The initiative is designed to:

Close gaps in manual identity verification systems
Strengthen aviation security and data integrity
Improve revenue tracking and operational efficiency

While strict identification protocols already exist for international travel, VPASS will extend similar standards to domestic flights, with plans to expand into private aviation in the future.

How the System Will Be Deployed

Implementation will begin with infrastructure rollout by VERXID Technologies Limited, followed by a nationwide sensitization campaign to drive awareness and adoption.

The system will leverage:

Facial recognition technology
Biometric data verification
Contactless passenger processing

This is expected to significantly reduce reliance on physical identification at airports.

Key Stakeholders Back the Initiative

The project is being executed under a public-private partnership framework, with support from:

Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria
Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission

Officials say the rollout reflects the government’s commitment to modernizing aviation through technology-driven solutions.

Stakeholders also highlighted that collaboration and strict adherence to timelines will be critical to ensuring the system’s success and scalability.

The introduction of VPASS marks a significant shift in Nigeria’s domestic aviation landscape, with several key benefits:

Enhanced security: Reduces identity fraud and unauthorized boarding
Faster processing: Enables seamless passenger movement at airports
Improved data accuracy: Strengthens tracking and analytics
Reduced human interference: Limits corruption and inefficiencies

The move aligns Nigeria with global best practices in aviation security and passenger experience.

Part of Broader Airport Modernisation Efforts

The VPASS rollout builds on earlier government initiatives to digitize airport operations, including the deployment of e-gates at international airports.

Key locations include:

Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport – 8 e-gates installed
Murtala Muhammed International Airport – 21 e-gates planned

Additional installations were proposed for airports in Kano, Enugu, and Port Harcourt, targeting a broader nationwide rollout.

These systems are designed to enable immigration clearance in under 30 seconds, improving passenger experience.

The VPASS initiative signals a transition toward a more secure, efficient, and technology-driven aviation ecosystem in Nigeria.

Passengers can expect faster, seamless airport processes
Authorities gain better oversight and data-driven insights
The aviation sector moves closer to global digital standards

If successfully implemented, VPASS could redefine how identity is managed across Nigeria’s travel system.
