MTN Uses AI to Hunt Down ‘Gigabyte Thieves’ as Data Complaints Mount
As customers continue to question rapid data depletion, MTN is turning to artificial intelligence to analyse usage patterns, detect anomalies and investigate what it calls “gigabyte thieves” on its network.

For millions of Nigerian mobile subscribers, few things are more frustrating than watching a freshly purchased data bundle disappear seemingly before they have had a chance to use it.
Now, MTN Nigeria is turning to technology to get closer to the bottom of the “missing gigabytes” mystery.
The telecom giant is deploying artificial intelligence, analytics and automated monitoring capabilities across its operations, while also opening its data billing processes to greater scrutiny as complaints over rapid data depletion continue to dominate consumer conversations.
The move comes against the backdrop of MTN’s June 2026 “Data on Trial” initiative, where the company brought together consumers, journalists, technology experts, independent auditors and other stakeholders to examine how mobile data is consumed, measured and billed.
The ‘Gigabyte Thieves’ Problem
The phrase “gigabyte thieves” has become a colourful description of the mystery many subscribers experience when their data balances appear to evaporate faster than expected.
But MTN maintains that rapid depletion does not necessarily mean data has been improperly deducted.
According to the company, everyday digital activities including video streaming, automatic downloads, cloud backups, application updates, background app activity and hotspot sharing can consume substantial amounts of data without users realising it.
The rise of 4G and 5G connectivity can also encourage higher-quality video and richer digital content, increasing consumption.

MTN’s broader technology strategy already includes AI-powered systems designed to identify anomalies, detect fraud and monitor operations at scale.
Its AI Eyeballing Platform, for example, uses computer vision and visual analytics for identity verification, fraud detection and operational monitoring.

The wider use of advanced analytics provides telecom operators with the ability to identify unusual patterns that may be difficult to detect through conventional manual monitoring.

MTN Says It Does Not ‘Steal’ Customer Data
MTN has explicitly rejected claims that it deducts or “steals” customers’ data. The company says customers experiencing unexpectedly fast depletion should examine their device level data consumption, including which applications are consuming the most data.
MTN also points subscribers towards the myMTN NG App and its Zigi virtual assistant for monitoring usage and getting support.
The company’s position is that transparency and better consumer education are central to resolving the controversy.

The June “Data on Trial” initiative represented an unusual attempt by a major telecom operator to put its billing and network operations under public examination.
MTN said the exercise was designed to determine whether customer complaints were caused by genuine technical issues, misconceptions about data consumption or gaps in consumer understanding.
