Maida, who was welcomed to the forum by the ITU Secretary-General, Doreen Bogdan-Martin, spoke about his key priorities aimed at improving Nigerian telecom consumer experience and fast-tracking broadband penetration in the country.
The telecom industry regulator, in a statement posted on his X page, restated his commitment to enhancing service quality and expanding broadband access across every corner of Nigeria.
During the meeting, Maida seized the opportunity to explore potential avenues for collaboration and to advocate for Nigerian representation within the ITU.
He stated: “Earlier today, I was received by the Sec. General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Doreen Bogdan-Martin, on the sidelines of the ITU WRC 2023 in Dubai.
“I used the occasion of our first meeting to share my vision and priorities for the NCC.
“Top of these are improving the quality of experience for consumers and advancing broadband penetration across the nooks and crannies of Nigeria”, the NCC boss added.
According to him, the meeting with the ITU Secretary-General, provided a platform to discuss potential collaborative initiatives between the global industry organization and Nigeria even as he spoke on the need for increased involvement of Nigeria in the ITU activities and programmes.
He quoted Bogdan-Martin as saying that she is “very happy to hear that. This area is one of your priorities, sir. More grease for your elbow,”
Industry analysts believe that Maida’s engagement at the ITU WRC 2023 reflected his sustained commitment to positioning Nigeria at the leading edge of the global telecom advancement drives, with a focus on enhancing connectivity and ensuring a seamless consumer experience.
Also, they opine that the discussions underscored the importance of international collaboration in shaping the future of Nigeria’s telecommunications industry with the attendant positively implications for the Federal Government’s current drive towards a digitalized economy.
