The Federal Government has announced plans to officially launch Nigeria’s long-awaited nationwide digital television platform, FreeTV, on June 17, offering Nigerians access to more than 100 free-to-air channels covering news, sports, education, entertainment, and children’s programming in multiple local languages.
The launch date was disclosed by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during a facility tour of NIGCOMSAT alongside the Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission, Dr. Charles Ebuebu, and other stakeholders in Abuja.
The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) had initially scheduled the launch for May 15 before shifting it to the new date.
Speaking during the visit, Idris said Nigeria’s transition from analogue to digital broadcasting — popularly known as the Digital Switch Over (DSO) — is finally ready after years of delays and unsuccessful attempts.
“I have been grappling with this idea of the DSO for many years. Moving our transmissions from analogue to digital has now happened and is ready to be commissioned by June 17,” the minister said.
According to him, several television channels have already been integrated into the platform, which is expected to significantly transform television broadcasting, advertising, and content distribution across Nigeria and the wider Sub-Saharan African region.
Idris explained that the digital platform introduces modern audience measurement technology capable of tracking real-time viewing patterns, allowing advertisers to make data-driven decisions based on audience preferences and demographics.
“Now science is at play. If you are viewing a station, we know who is watching what and how many people are watching. Advertisers can now take informed decisions about the kind of programming Nigerians want to watch across all demographics,” he stated.
The minister credited the collaboration between NIGCOMSAT, the National Broadcasting Commission, the Ministry of Communications, and the Ministry of Information for making the project possible, while also commending President Bola Tinubu for supporting the initiative.
He noted that previous DSO attempts struggled because set-top boxes were encrypted and expensive for average Nigerians. However, the new FreeTV platform is designed to be free and more accessible nationwide.
“In the past, the boxes were encrypted and costly. Now this is free. Government has taken off some of those costs on behalf of Nigerians,” Idris said.
Unlike earlier pilot phases limited to select cities, the new platform will leverage NIGCOMSAT’s satellite infrastructure to provide nationwide coverage.
“Everybody can now watch whatever he wants in real time and painlessly. Free TV everywhere for everybody,” he declared.
The minister also suggested that the launch of FreeTV could disrupt Nigeria’s pay-TV market by giving consumers wider entertainment options at no cost.
“You no longer have that monopoly again. Competition is going to set in. Content will grow and viewership will grow,” he added.
Idris further revealed that the platform would initially launch in Standard Definition (SD) before transitioning to High Definition (HD) shortly after rollout, aligning Nigeria’s broadcasting industry with global standards.
“Soon after the launch, we are moving to HD. Nigeria will now compete globally. What you watch here is what you get anywhere,” he said.
He also disclosed that the FreeTV service is already accessible through a mobile application and has successfully completed testing ahead of the official unveiling.
Also speaking during the tour, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NIGCOMSAT described the partnership between NIGCOMSAT and NBC as strategic to strengthening Nigeria’s digital broadcasting ecosystem and improving service delivery nationwide.
She added that ongoing investments and planned satellite expansion projects under the current administration would ensure reliable and uninterrupted broadcasting services across the country.
