    Bosun Tijani Unveils Portal for Nigerian Startups to Register for Support and Engagement

    Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, has announced the launch of the Startup Support and Engagement Portal, to kickstart the implementation of the Nigeria Startup Act.

    With the announcement by the minister, the official registration of startups across Nigeria has begun in anticipation of identifying what startups and what specific area of interventions will be required by each startups.

    The Nigeria Startup Act was signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari on the 19th of October, 2022. Over 30 leaders in Nigeria’s tech ecosystem contributed to its drafting between June and September 2021.The Act is aimed at ensuring that Nigeria’s laws and regulations are clear, planned and work for the tech ecosystem.

    “We are pleased to announce the launch of the Startup Support and Engagement Portalstartup.gov.ng, a key requirement for the implementation of the Nigeria Startup Act.,” said Tijani.

    Adding: “The startup portal will drive the identification and aggregation of Nigerian startups, venture capital companies, hubs and innovation centres in order to facilitate engagement and support for ecosystem players.

    “The launch of the portal will allow us initiate the process of setting up the startup consultative forums to select representatives to the National Council for Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurship, in order to facilitate discourse and consensus among Nigerian ecosystem players.

    “We invite all Nigerian startups venture capital companies, hubs and innovation centres to register at the portal startup.gov.ng and look forward to working with all industry stakeholders to ensure that we fully implement the Startup Act for the benefit of our innovation ecosystem.”

    Dr. Maida holds an MEng in Information Systems Engineering from Imperial College, London, and a PhD in Electrical & Electronic Engineering from the University of Bath, UK.

    Prior to his appointment, he was the Executive Director, Technology and operations at Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System Plc (NIBSS).

    At NIBSS, he standardized devices in the financial system for interoperability, ensuring all terminals accepted cards issued by banks and licensed schemes.

    Before NIBSS, he was the Chief Technical Officer at Arca Payments Network and a Senior Manager at Cisco Systems, UK.

    With over 15 years of experience, he worked as a Network Design Consultant at EE, part of BT Group, and as a System Engineer at Ubiquisys, now part of Cisco.

    Dr. Maida is technically strong and commercially aware, showcasing a breadth of experience in FinTech, Telecoms, and Enterprise Technology.

    He is a professional par excellence, combining technical expertise with commercial acumen.

    Dr. Maida is a family man, married with children.

    He succeeds Prof. Umar Danbatta as the Chief Telecom Regulator of Nigeria.

    FG Receives One Million Applications for 3MTT Programme

    The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has said that the Federal Government’s planned Three Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme has crossed the one million mark in terms of applications received thus far.

    Tijani, who said the Federal Government would firm up plans as regards it, disclosed that the Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy would soon announce the next line of actions as regards the 3MTT.

    The minister, who announced the development, yesterday, via a post on X, said the next step for the applicants would be announced in the next 12 hours.

    In the X post, Tijani put total trainees at 1,001,457; total providers at 18, 644 and total partners at 1,407.

    Recall that the Minister had announced a N1 billion funding for the programme to be provided by IHS Telecom.

    According to the minister, the N1 billion funding from IHS Towers also includes a commitment to paying the salaries of 37 dedicated learning community managers for each location for the next three years.

    The support came as a boost to the Federal Government’s programme, which seeks to train three million Nigerians in technical skills over the next four years.

    According to the implementation plans released by the government in October, the training will be held in three phases.

    The first phase is expected to accommodate 30,000 people, while the second phase will admit 300,000, and the three million to be completed in the third phase.

    According to Tijani, the 3MTT programme is a critical part of the Renewed Hope agenda, and is aimed at building Nigeria’s technical talent backbone to power its digital economy and position Nigeria as a net talent exporter.

    He said the first phase of the programme, executed in collaboration with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), would involve multiple stakeholders, including fellows, training providers, partners and placement organisations.

    In the first phase, he said the government would select individuals with an interest in specific skills and fund the cost of their training with training providers accepted into the programme.

    The Cloud Network Foundation (CNF), a registered non government organization devoted to the growth, development and emergence of Telecommunications and ICT as the chief driver of the nation’s economy. has congratulated  Dr. Bosun Tijani on his appointment as the minister in the newly re-designated Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy.
    The Foundation, a critical stakeholder in the Nigerian communications sector, while welcoming the new minister also  assured him of its willingness and readiness to provide invaluable supports to make his tenure eventful and remarkable in the growth and development of the national economy.
    Mr Abimbola Tooki, chairman of the Foundation,  acknowledged the new minister’s pedigree  and as a co-labourer for the emergence of information ànd communication technology industry as the money spinner, content and job creator for the teeming youths and masses in the country.
    This, Tooki said, is in line with the ambition of President Bola Tinubu to create one million digital jobs within the first two years of his administration as listed in his election manifesto and amplified in his inaugural speech.
    He noted the fact that telecoms and ICT services remain the highest contributor to the nation’s GDP. As at the Q1 of 2023, the sub-sector recorded 14.13 percent contributions to the nation’s GDP.
    The Foundation therefore challenged the minister to place on the front burner issues of insecurity as it impact on the wellness of the country’s  investment climate.  “This area requires urgent national attention and needs immediate remedies,” he said. “The deliberate disruption and destruction to this national critical infrastructure must be a major focus in your interactions with the government at all levels and the Security architecture of the nation.
    “We also must call your attention to the challenges of multiple taxation, Right of Ways (RoW) row in the different states, spiraling inflation, excessive import taxes and the unstable policy environment which has continued to encumbered the growth and development of the economy. “
    Tooki said the issue of harmonized national database too has been on the drawing board for a long time. “And if you are able to bring the matter to closure, your name will be perpetually etched in the quick sand of time when Nigeria is listed among nations of the world with reliable national database,” he said.
    According to him, currently, National Identity Management Commission (NIMC ) is managing the National Identity Number (NIN), at the top of the pyramid. Other agencies also having custody of citizens’ biometric details are the Federal Road Safety Corps (Driver’s licenses), Central Bank of Nigeria managing Bank Verification Number (BVN), Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) in custody of the international passport and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in charge of the national voters’ card. “We hope that your intervention would ensure the harmonized national database under the management of NIMC.,” he said.
    On this strength of its convergence value addition, Tooki said the Foundation would collaborate with the minister as strategic stakeholder in the evolution of this industry for the overall good of our nation.

    Bosun Tijiani Named Nigeria’s New Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy

    President Bola Tinubu has assigned portfolios to ministers who were recently cleared by the Senate and Dr. Bosun Tijani will lead the Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy.

    Tijani, CEO, and co-founder of Co-Creation Hub (CcHub), comes to office with a formidable exposure in global tech ecosystem fulfilling the President’s desire to let the sector have “its own man” and have someone as minister that meets “the criteria for youthfulness in terms of age and global exposure in terms of ‘connectedness’ to the Big Tech economy.

    The new minister is leading a renamed ministry. It was Ministry of Ministry of Communications & Digital Economy but now Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital  Economy to underscore government’s new focus on innovation.

    Born July 20, 1977 in Agege, Lagos where he spent his formative years before moving to Abeokuta, Ogun State for his secondary education, Tijani moved to Jos in 1996 to study at the University of Jos where he first studied for a diploma in Computer Science before proceeding to study Economics and graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in 2002 from the same university.

    In 2007, he obtained an MSc. in Information Systems and Management from the Warwick Business School in England and completed a PhD programme in Innovation and Economic Development at the University of Leicester this year.

    Tijani, a Nigerian-British entrepreneur is a respected pioneer and industry leader in the African technology ecosystem. He led CcHub in 2019 to acquire Kenya’s iHub and launched the CcHub Design Lab in Kigali, Rwanda in the same year. In 2023, .CcHub consolidated its pan-African footprint with the launch of CcHub Namibia in Windhoek.

    He initiated the first visit of Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg to Nigeria in August 2016 to strengthen Africa’s tech presence and hosted former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey in 2019 in Lagos. This June, 2023, he hosted a fireside chat with Microsoft founder and co-Chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Bill Gates.
