  • Top 3 Ways To Protect Yourself From iPhone Thieves

Top 3 Ways To Protect Yourself From iPhone Thieves

A complex but concerning method of gaining control over a user’s iPhone and permanently locking them out the device appears to be on the rise.

Some iPhone thieves are exploiting a security setting, called the recovery key, that makes it nearly impossible for owners to access their photos, messages, data and more, according to a recent Wall Street Journal report. Some victims also told the publication their bank accounts were drained after the thieves gained access to their financial apps.

It’s important to note, however, this type of takeover is hard to pull off. It requires a criminal essentially watching an iPhone user enter the device’s passcode – for example, by looking over their shoulder at a bar or sporting event – or manipulating the device’s owner so they’ll share their passcode. And that’s all before they physically steal the device.

From there, a thief could use the passcode to change the device’s Apple ID, turn off “Find my iPhone” so their location can’t be tracked, and then reset the recovery key, a complex 28-digit code intended to protect its owners from online hackers.

Apple requires this key to help reset or regain access to an Apple ID in an effort to bolster the user’s security, but if a thief changes it, the original owner will not have the new code and will be locked out of the account.

Apple said in a statement that the company is working tirelessly every day to protect  users’ accounts and data, and are always investigating additional protections against emerging threats like this one.”

On its website, Apple warns “you’re responsible for maintaining access to your trusted devices and your recovery key. If you lose both of these items, you could be locked out of your account permanently.”

Jeff Pollard, VP and principal analyst at Forrester Research, said the company should offer more customer support options and “ways for Apple users to authenticate so they can reset these settings.”

For now, however, there are a handful of steps users can take to potentially protect themselves from having this happen to them.

    Protect the passcode
The first step is protecting the passcode.

An Apple spokesperson said that  people can use Face ID or Touch ID when unlocking their phone in public to avoid revealing their passcode to anyone who might be watching.

Users can also set up a longer, alphanumeric passcode that’s harder for bad actors to figure out. Device owners should also change the passcode immediately if they believe someone else has seen it.

    Screen Time settings
Another step someone could consider is a hack not necessarily endorsed by Apple but one that’s been circulating online. Within an iPhone’s Screen Time setting, which allows guardians to set up restrictions on how kids can use the device, there is the option to set up a secondary password that would be required from any user before they could successfully change an Apple ID.

By enabling this, a thief would be prompted for that secondary password before changing an Apple ID password.

    Back up phone regularly
Finally, users can protect themselves by regularly backing up an iPhone – via iCloud or iTunes – so data can be recovered in the case an iPhone is stolen. At the same time, users may want to consider storing important photos or other sensitive files and data in another cloud service, such as Google Photos, Microsoft OneDrive, Amazon Photos or Dropbox.

This won’t stop a bad actor from gaining access to the device, but it should limit some of the fallout if it ever should happen.

  • iPhone Sales in China Shrink as US Political Tensions Grow

iPhone Sales in China Shrink as US Political Tensions Grow

The reports come amid a floundering Chinese economy, a struggling housing market, and more competition among higher-end vendors in China, particularly from Chinese device manufacturer Huawei.

“We’re seeing a lot of nationalism right now as Chinese consumers who think they’ve been wronged by the US government and sanctions are gravitating toward the Mate 60 and that is edging into Apple volumes,” Jeff Fieldhack, research director at Counterpoint.

At the same time, China remains very important to Apple as it is the largest market behind the US. Fieldhack said he doesn’t believe Huawei will surpass Apple right now in terms of smartphone sales but expects continued interest in the Mate 60 will continue to “eek” into Apple’s numbers.

“Apple made a lot of gains during its launch period last year, where it became number one in China,” he said. “Things looked strong but now, with the political tension and competition, that is a reason for concern.”

However, the Phone 15 lineup is up about 10% year-over-year in the US, according to Counterpoint. That’s strong growth for Apple considering sales fell for the third consecutive quarter in August, ahead of the iPhone 15 launch.

The latest iPhone 15 devices come with a slimmer design, a more-advanced main camera system and a customizable Action button, which gives the silence button additional controls, from starting a voice memo to writing a note. Perhaps the biggest change coming to the models is that they will now use a USB-C charging cord, ending an 11-year run with Apple’s proprietary Lightning charging cable.

This isn’t the first time the Mate 60 has made headlines since its late August launch. In September, the US government sought more information about the Mate 60 Pro’s 5G Kirin 9000s processor reportedly developed specifically for the manufacturer. Its debut shocked industry experts who questioned how the company could make such a chip following sweeping efforts by the United States to restrict China’s access to foreign chip technology because of perceived national security concern

  • iPhone Maker, Foxconn Sees Revenue Slump as Demand Weakens

iPhone Maker, Foxconn Sees Revenue Slump as Demand Weakens

Apple’s biggest supplier Foxconn says its revenue last month fell by 11.65% compared to the same period in 2022 due to weaker demand for electronics.

However, February revenue was more than $13bn (£10.8bn), the second highest figure on record for the month.

Foxconn added that operations at the world’s biggest iPhone factory in the Chinese city of Zhengzhou are recovering from Covid disruptions.

Also over the weekend the firm said it was exploring opportunities in India.

Foxconn said in a statement on Sunday that revenue from computing, smart consumer electronics and cloud and networking products declined in February from a year earlier “due to conservative customers’ pull-in”.

“Based on the revenue performance in the first two months, the outlook for first quarter 2023 is roughly in line with market expectation,” the company added.

In November, Apple warned that shipments of its new iPhone 14 would be delayed after Chinese officials locked down a district in Zhengzhou where Foxconn’s mega-factory is located.

Two weeks later protests erupted at the plant which disrupted manufacturing as thousands of workers left production lines.

Last month, Foxconn said its revenue in January had jumped by 48.2% from a year earlier to hit a record high, as manufacturing in Zhengzhou returned to pre-pandemic levels.

Separately, at the weekend Foxconn responded to reports that it had agreed to significantly expand its operations in India, after its chairman and chief executive Young Liu visited the country last week.

Media outlets reported that the firm planned to invest up to to $1bn in a major iPhone plant in Bengaluru. There were also reports that Foxconn’s investment in India would create around 100,000 jobs.

Foxconn also did not include the reported figures in its statement on Saturday.

“Foxconn will continue to communicate with local governments to seek the most beneficial development opportunities for the company and all stakeholders,” Mr Liu said.

iPhones are currently assembled in India by several Apple suppliers, including Foxconn.

The Taiwan-headquartered company, which is known formally as Hon Hai Precision Industry, assembles the devices at a site in Tamil Nadu.

  • Apple Hikes App Store Purchases for iPhone users in Nigeria, UK

Apple Hikes App Store Purchases for iPhone users in Nigeria, UK

iPhone users in Nigeria and six other countries will be parting with more cash when making purchases on the Apple app store from February 23, 2023, as the US device maker implements changes due to shifts in taxes and money exchange rates.

Apple in December 2022, earlier announced an upgrade to pricing capabilities that would provide developers on the app store with 700 additional price points and new pricing tools that will enable them set prices per App Store country or region, manage foreign exchange rate changes, and more.

According to the update seen on the App developer blog, the countries where the app store price increment will affect include Colombia, Egypt, Hungary, Nigeria, Norway, South Africa, and the United Kingdom.

For some other countries like Uzbekistan, there will be a reduced price when making purchases on the app store to reflect a reduction of the value-added tax rate from 15% to 12%.

Users in Ireland, Luxembourg, Singapore, and Zimbabwe will also maintain their current payment structure as the prices will not be changed but proceeds for developers will be adjusted to reflect the following tax changes.

Local developers in Cambodia, Kyrgyzstan, Indonesia, Singapore, South Korea, Tajikistan, Thailand, and Uzbekistan will also witness an increase in the proceeds by the end of January 2023.

According to Apple, it set up the App Store’s commerce and payments system to empower the developers and help them conveniently build, develop and sell their products and services at a global scale with 44 currencies across 175 Storefronts.

It further stated that the changes in its app store price setting is done globally using publicly available exchange rate information which is sourced from financial data and helps the prices stay equalized.

  • iPhone and Android in Popularity Battle in Nigeria

iPhone and Android in Popularity Battle in Nigeria

There has been a silent battle between iPhone and Android users over the years. The war of devices has caused a great debate among users, with many proclaiming the awesomeness of their preferred option.

There appears to be a strict divide in the technology space between iPhone and android, although there are other less popular choices like Microsoft Windows. These are the two biggest devices in Nigeria but the question is, which is more popular today?

    Difference Between iPhone and Android

Before we can determine the popularity of iPhone and android devices it is paramount to understand their differences. It is also important to be well versed in all their various aspects and the different services they offer.

The major difference between iPhone and android is in the operating system which is the software that runs the device. Given the growth of technology over the years, the operating system has brought advanced functions that were previously only available on computers.

Launched in 2007, the iPhone runs on a closed source operating system called the iOS, while android operating systems are open sourced. There are benefits and drawbacks with each operating system and the user’s preference and what they intend to benefit from it.

The closed source iOS provides relatively good security as Apple releases new patches regularly. However, the closed source iOS means that the iPhone is less customizable than android devices, particularly with variables such as interface and widget organization.

Also, while both devices generally run the same apps, there are a few differences in the way they are installed. Iphones can only install from the App Store while there are certain apps that are not available on android’s Google Play Store and may require some settings adjustments before installation.

A typical example of this is with betting apps which are not directly available on the Google Play Store as explained on comparison site Betting Apps Nigeria . If you own an android device, you can download betting apps directly from the operator’s website but may have to change some settings to allow installation from unknown sources.

However, once the app is installed, it runs the same way on both devices and there is hardly any difference in speed of operations.

    IPhone vs Android: Popularity

Nigeria is Africa’s second-largest mobile market behind South Africa and that means there are sizable sales for mobile devices in this region. While many manufacturers have joined and exited the Nigerian market, others have withstood the test of time and are showing no signs of slowing down.

Of course, the most popular mobile devices in Nigeria are the iPhones and android as they record the most sales. However, it is difficult to determine which is more popular with the split of users seemingly divided down the middle.

The iPhone is considered a premium item by the majority of Nigerians and as such is a bit on the expensive side. It is a testament to its appeal that it has remained popular among mobile users over the years despite its priciness.

Among the myriad of reasons for the iPhone’s sustained popularity is the feeling of exclusivity. There is a feeling among Nigerians that using an iPhone includes you in an exclusive clique. This particular factor is constantly being played up to humorous effect across social media.

Curiosity also plays a part as people are usually puzzled as to what the fuss is about and what makes it so expensive. The slick design and speed also earns them plenty of admirers among a wide range of users.

Android devices, particularly Samsung, is ranked up there among the most popular among Nigerians. For starters, Samsung is already a popular brand beyond mobile manufacturing as they have a major section for electrical devices.

Although there are numerous devices that use the android operating system, Samsung accounts for a major chunk of the interest in the device. Due to the popularity of Samsung, android devices are held in regard among Nigerians

While there are truly high-end android devices, they are generally more affordable than iPhones. This is one of the reasons for its enduring popularity overtime as it is considered easily accessible to a wide range of users.

Android devices are also believed to be more durable than the iPhones while repairs are not too costly.

    Conclusion

It is difficult to determine which device is more popular as there appears to be a split down the middle. Most people tend to own both devices, using each device for a different function.

One thing that is undeniable is that the iPhone’s popularity remains high despite being the only device with the iOS operating system. Sales of the iPhone remain high and there are usually long queues and large pre-orders whenever a new model is rolled out.

Meanwhile android devices ride on the popularity of Samsung, although there are other devices like Tecno and Infinix making inroads in Nigeria.

  • Apple Set to Increase the Price of iPhones and iPad Replacement Batteries

Apple Set to Increase the Price of iPhones and iPad Replacement Batteries

Users of Apple devices may need to budget an extra $20 – $50 (about N9000- N22,500) to purchase a replacement battery for their gadgets if it goes bad. In a recent update, Apple announced it will be raising the price of replacement batteries in most iPhonesiPads, and Macs, starting on March 1, 2023. The price increase has, however, been tailored to the device type.

According to a report by The Verge, Apple confirmed the hike for iPhones in its recent statement saying “the out-of-warranty battery service fee will be increased by $20 for all iPhone models prior to iPhone 14.”

For the models older than the iPhone 14, replacement batteries for the products that come with a home button and those that require face IDs will also have different price increments.

What this means is the replacement batteries for this category of phones will be going from $49 to $69 for iPhones with a home button and, for face ID phones, the price will be going from $69 to $89.

Apple also set a price increment of $30 for “all MacBook Air models” bringing the price from $129 to $159.

For the MacBook (the 12-inch computer introduced in 2015) and MacBook Pros, which currently has a price tag of $199 for the replacements, the new price will be hiked by $50, to $249.

According to Apple’s website, the iPads will have a uniform fee hike at $20 across board since there are many versions of the product but will apply to the following models – iPad Pro 12.9-inch (5th generation and prior) — the current model is the 6th-gen, released in 2022.

    • iPad Pro 11-inch (3rd generation and prior) — the current is the 4th-gen, released in 2022.
    • iPad Pro 10.5-inch
    • iPad Pro 9.7-inch
    • All iPad minis
    • All iPad Airs

Apple last updated the battery price increase in 2019 when it announced prices for new battery purchase after users complained of battery issues with the company’s older products.

  • WhatsApp to Stop Working on iPhone, Samsung, Others from December 31

WhatsApp to Stop Working on iPhone, Samsung, Others from December 31

WhatsApp periodically phases out older smartphones, so it’s no surprise that this year around 50 devices will no longer be able to run the messaging app. This is the second time in the last three months that WhatsApp is phasing out support for a big chunk of Android and iOS devices.

The last time happened in October when WhatsApp revealed it will no longer support iPhone SE, iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, as well as no less than 40 Android devices from Samsung, Huawei, LG, Sony, ZTE, HTC, Lenovo, and Alcatel.

This time around WhatsApp confirmed it will no longer support nearly 50 phones, including the Apple iPhone 5 and iPhone 5c. The rest of the phones on the list are made by Samsung, Huawei, LG, Sony, Lenovo, and ZTE.

The reason these phones will no longer be supported is that they haven’t been updated in a very long time. It looks like WhatsApp has upped the requirements for its app, so phones that don’t run at least Android 5.0 Lollipop or iOS 12.

Currently, WhatsApp’s FAQ still mentions that it supports Android phones running OS 4.1 and newer. However, many (if not all) of the phones that will lose WhatsApp support at the end of the year are running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, so we’re a bit on the fence regarding the accuracy of the information.

First reported by GizChina, the list includes mostly entry-level and mid-range smartphones. If you’re using one of these devices, you’ll probably want to upgrade to a newer phone to continue to use WhatsApp and receive new updates.

The large majority of these phones have already been discontinued, so it makes sense for WhatsApp to reroute its resources to where they’re most needed. The phones listed above should no longer be able to run WhatsApp come December 31, theoretically. Of course, there are workarounds that will allow WhatsApp users with unsupported devices to continue to run the app, but this is just delaying the inevitable.

According to WhatsApp, whenever it chooses what to stop supporting, the company looks at which devices and software are the oldest and have the fewest number of people still using them. That means that even if your phone runs a much older Android version, it might still be supported if WhatsApp decides that there are still many people who use that particular phone.

That said, as Apple and Google continue to push out new iOS and Android updates, WhatsApp will do its part and phase out the older devices running its app. It’s just another way to convince users to upgrade to newer devices if they want to continue to receive the same level of support all other WhatsApp users are getting.

  • China Locks Down the Worlds Biggest iPhone Plant

China Locks Down the Worlds Biggest iPhone Plant

Chinese authorities have locked down a district in Zhengzhou city – which is home to the world’s largest iPhone factory – under the country’s strict coronavirus measures.

The lockdown started on Wednesday and is set to last for seven days.

The move may have an impact on production of the new iPhone 14, which is made at Foxconn’s plant in the city.

Chinese people and businesses are continuing to grapple with President Xi Jinping’s rigid zero-Covid policy.

On Wednesday, local authorities said the lockdown of the Zhengzhou Airport Economy Zone would start immediately and end at midday local time on 9 November.

Public transport services have been suspended and people advised to work from home, according to an official notice on the WeChat social media platform.

Officials said they would “resolutely crack down on all kinds of violations of regulations”.

Zhengzhou is the capital of Henan province in central China and is home to about 10 million people.

It reported 167 locally transmitted infections in the seven days to last Saturday – up from 97 in the previous week.

The lockdown comes at a key time for Apple, shortly after the launch of the iPhone 14 and ahead of the crucial Christmas and Lunar New Year shopping seasons.

Foxconn’s Zhengzhou plant, which employs around 200,000 workers, produces the majority of Apple’s new phones.

On Tuesday, Foxconn said it had quadrupled its daily bonuses at the manufacturing hub after a breakout by workers during a Covid lockdown.

The firm said bonuses for assembly line workers will be raised to 400 yuan ($55.02; £47.76) a day.

Foxconn also said that people who worked for more than 25 days a month at the factory would be awarded a maximum bonus of 5,000 yuan, up from 1,500 yuan.

It added that those who put in their “full effort” in November – without taking any leave – could be paid a total bonus of more than 15,000 yuan for the month.

The company said the bonuses were part of an effort to “gradually resume orderly production” and “thank our fellow employees’ persistence”.

It has not yet provided an official count of how many people had been infected by the coronavirus at the plant.

Foxconn employees take shuttle buses to head home in Zhengzhou in the Henan province of China.

Last Wednesday, Foxconn said a “small number of employees” in Zhengzhou had been “affected by the pandemic” and were being provided with “material supplies, psychological comfort and responsive feedback”.

“At present, the epidemic prevention work in Zhengzhou is progressing steadily, and the impact on the group is controllable. The operating outlook for this quarter remains unchanged,” it added.

However, footage shared on Chinese social media, and by the BBC’s China correspondent Stephen McDonell, showed that workers were allegedly filmed escaping from the grounds to begin lengthy walks back to their hometowns, in a bid to avoid being caught on public transport.

One 22-year-old worker, surnamed Xia, told the Financial Times it was “total chaos in the dormitories” he and colleagues were being kept in.

Workers also claimed that the area surrounding the plant had been locked down for days, with Covid-positive workers being quarantined and tested daily to try to contain the outbreak.

On Sunday Foxconn said it would no longer require workers at the plant to eat meals in their rooms “to improve the convenience and satisfaction of employees’ lives”.

The firm added that it was working with the local government to provide a “point-to-point orderly return service” for workers who wanted to go home.

It is unclear how workers will now be able to return home after the district was locked down. Foxconn and Apple did not immediately respond to a BBC request for comment.

Other businesses in China have been hit by coronavirus outbreaks in recent days.

Earlier on Wednesday Chinese electric vehicle maker Nio confirmed that it had suspended production at two of its factories in the eastern city of Hefei.

This week the firm reported that it had delivered more than 10,000 vehicles in October.

It said the figures were “constrained by operation challenges in our plants as well as supply chain volatilities due to the Covid-19 situations in certain regions in China”.

  • iPhone And The Future of Satellite Phone Communications

iPhone And The Future of Satellite Phone Communications

Last week Apple launched new iPhones with several interesting new features. One feature reports if you have been in an accident (assuming your phone can connect), and another connects the phone to a satellite in a very limited way for those times when a cellular tower is out of range.

Starlink and T-Mobile are publicizing a yet non-existent service that should make Apple’s satellite service look like it escaped from the modem years. These all follow AST SpaceMobile which will be putting up its first 4/5G satellite next year to begin its coverage.

Let’s talk about our future of satellite cellular services this week. Then we’ll close with my product of the week: a very affordable pair of active noise-cancelling headphones that may be perfect for those that take long trips and need to sleep with them on.

    Apple Fills a Need

Apple’s Emergency SOS via satellite service, which will be the first to go live of these next generation services, is very limited. Its one big advantage is that it will work long before the others reach critical mass.

If you are in the middle of nowhere and need help, it will not do you any good to have a service that doesn’t work yet, so the limitations on the Apple service only become a problem for Apple when the other services get to critical mass. Look for that in or around 2025.

This service only works in open areas with a clear line of sight to the sky and, I expect, you may at times have to dance around a bit to get an adequate signal. It will not work if you fall into a ravine, get stuck in a cave, or are in a bunker.

Still, every year there are a ton of people that get stranded out where I live. They don’t realize that the weather can change very quickly here, and if you are a long way from your car or civilization in only shorts and a T-shirt when that happens, you’ll need help, or you are likely to lose anything from a few fingers to your life.

The app helps you find a satellite and then, through menus, uses the intelligence of the phone to minimize the message and get it to someone who can help you. It can, however, take anywhere from 15 seconds to several minutes to get a clean line of sight to the satellite for this to work. So, if you have a broken leg, or are otherwise disabled, you may still be out of luck.

Apple is working with Globalstar for this feature. IPhone 14 users, the only ones to initially get this feature, will get two years of this service for free. By then, there will likely be alternatives available, and this initial offering will undoubtedly also improve.

The service is better than nothing and, right now, unless you want to invest in an expensive Iridium (or other satellite) phone, that is pretty much your only choice. Iridium’s service, while expensive, is much less than I recall it being but still more expensive than traditional cellular.

    Starlink and T-Mobile

Elon Musk has an idea a minute and many are surprisingly good. Though I worked with a guy like Musk and know that working for or with someone like this is a nightmare because not every idea is good and, generally, people like this can’t tell the difference.

Having said that, the idea of turning the Starlink satellites into a telephone solution is interesting. However, given Starlink is already experiencing bandwidth issues, this service could make Starlink itself less attractive if it reduces, as it likely will, bandwidth to existing Starlink customers.

Musk also tends to overpromise and underdeliver, to miss announced delivery dates, and to create a considerable number of problems for his companies. Still, SpaceX is the cheapest launch platform currently in service, is surprisingly reliable, and most of the Starlink reviews I’ve seen have been impressively positive.

Personally, I would have waited until Starlink was profitable and performing at scale before offering another service on the network, but that is not Musk’s way. Until now, his big, risky bets have mostly worked out. But he and his companies remain one major mistake away from a crisis. Given the complexity of his companies, it seems almost certain he will eventually hit a nasty wall.

The service will initially be more capable than Apple’s satellite offering but not true cellular, and it will require the Starlink satellites to be upgraded. Beta of this service is rumored for late 2023, with full service expected within the following year in areas where there is a critical mass of the new satellites. If it doesn’t reach critical mass, T-Mobile and Starlink are in an interesting position to be the first to succeed with a satellite-based smartphone solution.

    AST SpaceMobile

AST SpaceMobile, which is slated to launch its low earth Satellite in 2023, has partnerships with companies like Vodafone and AT&T providing a strong path for worldwide initial coverage. They will need between 45 and 65 Satellites to get to critical mass which should happen, assuming no major market shifts or the emergence of a better competing technology at scale, before the end of 2025.

The company is wrapped with 2,400 patents and should be able to provide decent 4/5G coverage once they get to critical mass. The service would be treated much like international travel or on-plane service for areas where there are cellular alternatives, so your phone will work where it currently doesn’t. Or as a primary phone service for those out of cellular coverage areas, like remote land or sea locations.

It certainly would be an improvement over ship-to-shore and most radio solutions for police and first responders working in areas where there either is no cellular service or where cellular service has been disrupted. Unlike the other two services, AST SpaceMobile’s will be like regular cellular in that it will support both voice and data and not have the limitations of the other two services. But its quality and data throughput will lag terrestrial cellular services indefinitely.

This service should also work on planes and be superior to what you currently get on an airplane. It will support both voice and data while planes currently just support data (people have been against getting cellular coverage on planes for fear that those using it would drive them crazy with loud constant phone calls).

    Wrapping Up

With Apple’s announcement last week, we are now in the world of consumer satellite cellular communications and the increasing potential to be able to call for help from anywhere in the world, regardless of where the cell tower is located.

This could be huge for those that find themselves in trouble or lost in remote areas and provide a level of peace of mind for parents who freak when they cannot locate their kids.

Apple is just the beginning. Companies like Starlink and T-Mobile promise far better data bandwidth than Apple, and AST SpaceMobile promises a global general purpose 4/5G cellular service incorporating both voice and data in the same general time frame.

By the second half of this decade, the idea of being out of service may be as obsolete as the need to find a phone booth was back in the 1990s. That, my friends, is something worth looking forward to.

Apple Watch Series 8 has a number of new features, including car crash detection, temperature sensors for tracking ovulation cycles and a new low-power mode option.

People have been cautious about menstrual trackers since changes were made to abortion legislation in the US and there are concerns that data about periods could be used by law enforcement. Apple says the data on its devices will be encrypted and only accessible via a passcode or biometrics.

“We are taking our commitment to women’s health even further,” said Jeff Williams, chief operating officer at Apple.

Apple said a new automatic retrospective ovulation notification could help those who are trying to conceive.

If activated, the new watch can monitor body temperate every five seconds overnight, and detect tiny changes which can signal ovulation.

Another new feature is car crash detection. Using sensors, the watch will be able to identify a severe crash and will automatically connect its wearer with emergency services, provide their exact location and notify emergency contacts.

The Series 8 now also features a low power mode, a feature borrowed from the iPhone, that promises up to 36 hours of battery life on a full charge.

The Apple Watch Series 8 is priced from $399 in the US, £419 in the UK.

Swim-proof, dust-proof and crack-resistant – Apple has announced its rival to the likes of Garmin, Polar and other rugged watchmakers.

Ultramarathoner Scott Jurek from Born to Run appeared in the presentation for the new watch, which focused on a larger face design for extreme sports use.

All Ultra watches have up to 36 hours battery life on a single charge and an extended battery life of 60 hours, with Apple promising enough power for its customers to complete an ultra-triathlon which includes swimming, cycling and running.

The Apple Watch Ultra is priced from $799 in the US, £849 in the UK.

    iPhone 14

The company is releasing the iPhone 14 in two sizes, the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Plus.

The new handsets are capable of sending an emergency call for help via satellite. The phone will display the whereabouts of passing satellites overhead and demonstrate how to point the device at them correctly.

It can take from 15 seconds to a few minutes to send a basic message.

“The investment to add satellite capability should not be underestimated,” said Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight.

“It will likely have taken Apple years to put all the pieces of the puzzle in place, including a commercial agreement with satellite provider Globalstar, and the creation of the infrastructure needed to pass messages to the emergency services.”

Tech analyst Paolo Pescatore said he believed the innovation was good news for consumers “in hard-to-reach areas”.

“It is encouraging to see providers starting to get serious about using satellite – ultimately reliable and robust connectivity is still highly sought-after among all users,” he said.

    iPhone 14 camera

The tech giant announced a new 12-megapixel camera, capable of taking photos of fast-moving subjects, and the company claims a 49% improvement in low-light capturing.

The front camera also included auto-focus for the first time, to help sharpen selfies.

According to Apple, iPhone users took more than three trillion photos in the last 12 months.

The iPhone 14 is priced from $799 (US), £849 (UK).

The biggest change in iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max design is the top of the screen which is now a pill shaped cut-out.

A feature called the Dynamic Island has replaced the black notch, which many iPhone users complain about – and it can change shape depending on what notifications there are.

The other big change is that the handset can always remain on.

When the phone is not in use, the screen dims and the refresh rate is lowered.

The handset comes in a deep purple colour alongside black, silver and gold.

The iPhone 14 Pro is priced at $999 (US), £1099 (UK).

AirPods Pro are easier to find than their predecessors. Each pair comes with a new system for finding individual lost earphones, which play a chime when dropped outside of the case.

Additionally, the case itself gets its own speaker, which will play a louder sound when prompted by the Find My app.

The new AirPods Pro are priced at $249 (US), £249 (UK).

  • Pantami asks Nigerians to Update Devices to Block Hackers Terrorising iPhone, iPad, other Apple Products

Pantami asks Nigerians to Update Devices to Block Hackers Terrorising iPhone, iPad, other Apple Products

Minister of digital economy Isa Ali Pantami has advised Nigerians to update their Apple devices such as iPhone, iPads and Macbooks to avoid being targeted by high-level hackers, seeking to control their devices’ operating systems.

Mr Pantami on Saturday tweeted a two-minute clip of a CNN programme where Apple users were advised to immediately update their devices to outwit hackers exploiting a massive security flaw in the previous IOS, to access their location, bank details, photographs and other personal information.

“Update your Apple product now due to a massive flaw/vulnerability: Go to your Settings, then General, then hit Update Software,” tweeted Mr Pantami.

Hacking expert David Kennedy asserted the flaw could enable hackers listen to users’ phone conversations, access their text messages, emails and also cameras. He stressed the hacked information would in turn be sold for millions of dollars on the dark web.

To avoid their personal details being accessed and auctioned off, the communications minister appealed to Nigerians to update their Apple products.

“Update your Apple products right now pls,” Mr Pantami wrote.

Some commenters berated the minister for sharing information already in the public domain, while he kept mum on using digital channels to tackle insecurity.
