Bill Gates Warns AI Could Cause ‘A Billion Deaths’

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has issued one of his starkest warnings yet about artificial intelligence, saying AI is powerful enough to drive events that could result in “a billion deaths.”

Gates made the remark in excerpts from an NBC Meet the Press interview released ahead of its full broadcast.

“AI is certainly powerful enough to drive events that, you know, cause a billion deaths,” Gates said.

He added that there has never been a weapon as powerful as the combination of people with malicious intent and the latest AI tools.

Gates' warning is focused on how AI could be misused, rather than a prediction that such a catastrophe will occur.

He is also calling for governments and law-enforcement agencies to become more directly involved in establishing AI safeguards and monitoring systems.

According to Gates, relying solely on technology companies to police themselves is insufficient.

“No one thinks self-regulation is enough,” he said.

The warning comes as governments, AI companies and technology leaders continue to debate how to manage increasingly capable AI systems while preserving their potential benefits.

Gates has previously highlighted risks involving AI-enabled cyberattacks, dangerous biological applications and disruption to critical infrastructure.
