Tim Cook Exits Apple CEO Role After 15 Years, John Ternus Takes Over

Apple is entering a new leadership era as Tim Cook steps down as Chief Executive Officer after nearly 15 years at the helm, handing the reins to longtime hardware executive John Ternus.

The transition takes effect September 1, 2026, with Cook moving into the role of Executive Chairman of Apple’s board. The company says the succession was unanimously approved by its board following a long-term planning process. 
 

Cook became Apple CEO in August 2011, succeeding the late Steve Jobs. During his tenure, Apple dramatically expanded its global business, strengthened its services ecosystem and introduced major products including the Apple Watch and AirPods. The company’s market value also surged to the multi-trillion-dollar level. 

His successor, John Ternus, joined Apple in 2001 and has served as Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering. He has overseen engineering work across major product lines including the iPhone, iPad, Mac and AirPods, and played a key role in Apple's transition to Apple silicon.

Ternus now inherits one of the world's most valuable technology companies at a critical moment, with artificial intelligence, product innovation, global supply chains and competition from rivals among the major challenges ahead. 

Cook, meanwhile, is expected to remain closely involved with Apple as Executive Chairman, including engagement with policymakers around the world.
