The Chief Executive Officer of MTN Nigeria, Karl Toriola, earned $3.4 million (₦4.69 billion) in total compensation for 2025, marking a 61.2% increase year-on-year.
According to the 2025 full-year financial report released by MTN Group, Toriola’s total pay rose to R56.99 million, driven largely by performance-based incentives and equity awards.
Breakdown of earnings
Base pay & benefits: R17.9 million (~$1.07 million)
Short-term incentives (STI): R15.18 million (~$908,571)
Long-term incentives (LTI): R23.9 million (~$1.43 million)
The 2025 package represents Toriola’s highest annual compensation since becoming CEO in 2021.
What drove the increase?
The surge in earnings was largely tied to MTN Group’s strong financial performance and a significant rise in share price, which boosted the value of long-term incentive payouts.
Short-term bonuses were based on:
70% company performance
30% team performance
Long-term incentives:
Vest over a three-year period
Linked to strategic and sustainability goals
Paid in shares that appreciated 62% year-on-year
Performance-linked pay in focus
The compensation structure reflects a broader trend in the telecom sector, where executive pay is increasingly tied to financial performance, shareholder value, and long-term strategy execution.
For MTN, 2025 stands out as a record performance year, reinforcing investor confidence and translating directly into higher executive rewards.
As telecom giants scale revenue and expand digital infrastructure, executive compensation is becoming a key signal of performance, governance, and shareholder returns in Africa’s tech ecosystem.
