NITDA Boosts NAVSA Project with 50 Corp Members as Pilot Beneficiaries

With the mandate of ensuring all sectors of the Nation’s economy are supported and driven by technology, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), in collaboration with Abuja Technology Village (ATV) and the National Centre for Artificial intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR) has kicked off the National Adopted Village for Smart Agriculture NAVSA Pilot Training Programme for 50 Nigerian Youth Corps Members.

At the opening Ceremony of the training programme, Kashifu Inuwa, the Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), represented by the Agency’s Acting Director, Digital Economy Development Department, Engr Salisu Kaka while congratulating the participants who were selected from a pool of many applicants, challenged them to seize the laudable opportunity and be intentionally interested in Agricpreneurship so as to effectively utilise the knowledge and skills gained from the training to create jobs and contribute their quota in ensuring increased productivity, profitability, food security and Agriculture efficiency.

The DG who remarked that being selected to participate is one thing, but showing commitment to the programme is of utmost importance, emphasised the fact that the training which is for a period of six months is transformational and is packaged to make them become self-sufficient and job providers.

He advised that creativity and innovative thinking must be applied to developing better ways of solving economic issues in the country, especially in the Agricultural sector.

Inuwa also noted that the initiative is part of the Agency’s Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP-2021-2024) and expressed the belief that NITDA alongside it’s partners will scale up the initiative to accommodate more beneficiaries.

On his part, the National Coordinator of National Centre for Artificial intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR), Engr Garba Ya’u was of the opinion that to propel the Country towards the prosperity of Agriculture, their intrinsic intention to become Smart Farmers should translate to tangible innovative ideas in order to move the sector forward.

He revealed that as part of the pilot, Precision Agriculture will be introduced to the trainees.

“In the long run, we want to make sure you would not just be Agriculturalists but Tech Agriculturalists” he said.

Ya’u further said, irrespective of their fields of study, the programme is open to all and sundry and encouraged them to be open-minded to the possibilities that await them.

The representative of the Abuja Technology Village, Sarah Obayojie reiterated the company’s resolve to tackle the lingering challenges bedeviling the Agricultural sector through indigenous innovations and the application of technology.

“I therefore charge you to use this opportunity to make a difference by participating in all the segments of the programme and be assured that this project will positively transform your lives”.

The beneficiaries who took turns to ask questions and got some clarity on the prospects of the training, expressed gratitude to NITDA for the project and affirmed their respective commitments to the cause which they described as timely.

They were hopeful that after their service year, apart from looking for white collar jobs, they would already have something lucrative to hold on to as SMART FARMERS.

  • Bruce Willis gives up Acting Due to Brain Disorder Aphasia

Bruce Willis gives up Acting Due to Brain Disorder Aphasia

Bruce Willis will step away from his acting career after being diagnosed with aphasia, a condition that impedes a person’s ability to speak and write.

The actor’s family, including his wife Emma Heming-Willis and ex-wife Demi Moore, announced his condition on Instagram on Wednesday.

Aphasia is “impacting his cognitive abilities”, the statement said.

Willis, 67, is best known for playing John McClane in the Die Hard films, which made him a star.

“With much consideration Bruce is stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him,” his family wrote in a joint statement. “This is a really challenging time for our family and we are so appreciative of your continued love, compassion and support.”

Willis has five daughters, three with Ms Moore and two with Ms Heming-Willis.

    What is aphasia?

    • It’s when a person has difficulty with their language or speech
    • Usually caused by damage to the left side of the brain, like a stroke
    • Hampers reading, listening, speaking, typing or writing
    • Speaking problems are most common and can involve putting words together incorrectly

His acting career began in the early 1980s but he did not become a household name until later in that decade – first after starring opposite Cybill Shepherd in the ABC TV series Moonlighting and then in his 1988 performance as John McClane in the first Die Hard film.

Since then, his films including The Sixth Sense, Armageddon and Pulp Fiction have grossed more than $5bn worldwide, according to Variety. He’s been nominated for five Golden Globes, winning one for Moonlighting, and three Emmys, winning two.

Several actors and other stars offered their condolences to Willis and his family following the news.

“Grace and guts! Love to you all!” actress Jamie Lee Curtis wrote in response to Demi Moore’s post.

“Sending lots of love and healing to you all!” wrote journalist Katie Couric.

  • The Will Smith Slap And The Shape of Things to Come

The Will Smith Slap And The Shape of Things to Come

Will Smith was asked to leave the Oscars ceremony after hitting Chris Rock but refused, the Academy says.

The body also says it has initiated “disciplinary proceedings” against Smith.

Smith slapped Rock after the comic made a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head, a result of the hair-loss condition alopecia.

The actor – who won the first Oscar of his career at the ceremony – has since apologised.

In its statement, the Academy said: “Mr Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused, [but] we also recognize we could have handled the situation differently.”

It also announced it had “initiated disciplinary proceedings against Mr Smith for violations of the Academy’s Standards of Conduct”.

These include inappropriate physical contact, abusive or threatening behaviour, and compromising the integrity of the Academy, it said.

The Academy said action may be taken at its next board meeting on 18 April. That may include “suspension, expulsion, or other sanctions,” the statement said.

It also apologised directly to Rock, as well as nominees, guests and viewers.

Meanwhile, Rock said he is “still processing” the incident in his first public comments since the ceremony.

“How was your weekend?” he jokingly asked the crowd at a stand-up show in Boston, before saying he did not plan to address the incident at length.

“I’m still processing what happened, so at some point I’ll talk about that,” Rock told the crowd. “It’ll be serious. It’ll be funny, but right now I’m going to tell some jokes.”

The incident on Sunday night happened just before Smith won the Oscar for Best Actor, when the comedian Rock was on stage to present the award for Best Documentary.

Rock made a quip about Pinkett Smith’s shaved head. The joke referred to the 1997 film GI Jane, in which Demi Moore played the title role with a severe buzzcut.

Pinkett Smith rolled her eyes at the comment, while Smith appeared to initially laugh and clap his hands before he was seen on stage, walking up to Rock.

The comedian looked stunned in the immediate aftermath of the incident, but told the audience: “That was the greatest night in the history of television.”

In his apology, Smith said his behaviour was “unacceptable and inexcusable”.

“I would like to publicly apologise to you, Chris,” he said in a statement. “I was out of line and I was wrong.”

  • Disney Plus vs. Netflix: Which One Should You Choose?

Disney Plus vs. Netflix: Which One Should You Choose?

Looking to trim your streaming service budget? Here’s how Disney Plus and Netflix compare

As prices for essentials like gas and groceries creep up, you may be eyeing your entertainment budget. Do you really need every streaming service out there? Whether you’ve been a longtime Netflix subscriber, have Disney Plus for your kids, or break up and make up with HBO Max, you found a groove with the platforms you use. But at this point, something may have to go.

When Netflix shook the planet with its price hike, some people considered canceling the service for good. Disney Plus provides high-quality content that’s on par with Netflix, and its low cost makes it a top contender. But how do these two streaming giants stack up in content and value?

Both services have launched pop culture juggernauts, as seen with The Mandalorian and Stranger Things. During 2021, Disney Plus and Netflix had the most popular streaming content of the year, according to Nielsen. Both carry family-friendly gems, superhero stories, documentaries and feature films with A-list talent as headliners. And both are commercial-free zones.

Disney Plus and Netflix are part of most people’s households as go-to streaming platforms. If you’re someone who’s weighing costs against which one to ditch, here’s guidance on how to choose.

  • Netflix Seeks Telco Partnership to Unlock African Market.

Netflix Seeks Telco Partnership to Unlock African Market.

With their well-established customer bases and online payment methods, operators could prove to be lynchpin partners in unlocking African markets for the streaming service.

In recent months, Netflix has been strengthening its focus on Africa, both in terms of gaining new subscribers and diversifying its content.

Back in May, Netflix launched an initiative called ‘Made In Africa, Watched by the World’, which included the adding a large number of African shows, films, and documentaries to their portfolio.

“We want you to know that if you’re looking for the best African stories, then you will find them on Netflix. We are going to expand heavily to ensure that goal is met,” said Dorothy Ghettuba, Netflix head of Africa originals.

But more than just diversifying their video offerings, this also a process of proving the company’s renewed commitment to the African continent, supporting local film makers and creating content of interest to African consumers.

For a myriad of reasons, Africa has proved a very hard nut to crack for Netflix. For a company that has almost 200 million subscribers worldwide, only around 1.4 million of these are in Africa.

While there are many hurdles to overcome here, from pricing to internet access, Netflix firmly believes that premium video services can be profitable on the African continent; indeed, its continental rival, pay-TV firm Multichoice Group, currently boasts around 20 million subscribers in almost 50 African countries.

Multichoice also recently launched a direct streaming competitor to Netflix, called Showmax.

Recently, Neflix has expanded trials of mobile-only subscription plans in South Africa and Egypt to include additional African nations, including Nigeria, aiming to boost overall subscriptions.

This seems a sensible strategy; as a continent, Africa’s mobile penetration rate far exceeds that of fixed broadband, meaning for many potential customers mobile is the only way to access video streaming services.

Nonetheless, the cost of these plans, though far cheaper than a traditional subscription, still remains prohibitive. In Nigeria for example, the Netflix mobile subscription plan costs around $2.65 per month, while a classic subscription costs around $7.50.

However, the problem here becomes apparent when you consider that around 40% of the country’s almost 200 million people still live on less than $1 a month.

While mobile internet access is certainly rising in African countries – in Nigeria, it is expected to reach 101 million mobile internet users by 2021 – for now video streaming services remain out of reach for much of the population.

But an interesting solution could be found in the form of telco partnerships. With their existing subscriber bases, telcos offer a unique opportunity to for a company like Netflix to piggyback on their payment infrastructure, allowing customers to simply add the service to their connectivity bill.

Speaking to TechTV ahead of the company’s third-quarter results, Ms Ghettuba noted that the company already has partnerships with Vodacom and Telkom South Africa, suggesting that the company was on the look out for further tie-ups.

“Given the low credit card penetration across the continent […] we have partnered with local telcos […] for their customers to be able to add Netflix subscriptions to their bills,” she said.

She noted that the company’s next African target market would be Kenya, meaning there could be opportunities on the cards for the likes of Safaricom, which currently dominates the Kenyan mobile market.

Netflix believes Africa is a continent on which its streaming services have a bright future and working closely with telcos could be the key to overcoming some of its major challenges. For now, however, the company will have to settle for expanding its video library until further deals come to light

  • The headphones Every DJ Should Have

The headphones Every DJ Should Have

Before the pandemic hit Anne Frankenstein would be DJ-ing in bars or clubs most Friday and Saturday nights.

She laughs when asked if she misses it: “Not really, I kind of prefer the quiet life. I think I was playing a few too many gigs before lockdown. It’s been nice to just enjoy music at my own pace.”

Fortunately for Anne she has a day job – her mid-morning show on Jazz FM.

As well as making life hectic, those gigs took a toll on her kit, in particular headphones. She has “completely destroyed” headphones in the past through overuse and crushing them by accident.

Having learnt those expensive lessons, she doesn’t spend much on headphones for work.

“I just get a nice cheap, robust pair of headphones, that isolate the sound well enough so I can hear adequately to DJ.”

One of the reasons headphones can be delicate is that they have several moving parts inside. In fact the principle behind those moving parts has not changed much since speakers first emerged in the early 20th Century.

A diaphragm, coiled wire and magnets are at the heart of most headphones and speakers
By passing an electrical current through a coil of wire placed near to a magnet, you can make the coil move. Attach a thin sheet of material (diaphragm) to that coil and the vibrations will make sound.

The so-called moving coil system has become much more sophisticated over the years. Better materials and clever electronics have improved the sound quality, and speakers have shrunk to a size that can fit into the ear.

However, there are still multiple moving parts in modern headphones, which can be broken.

  • Netflix Releases new original contents from Nigeria

Netflix Releases new original contents from Nigeria

Netflix, the world’s leading Internet entertainment service, has announced new Nigerian original series in the pipeline plus three new Nigerian branded films licensed to Netflix.

Ben Amadasun, Netflix Director of Licensing and Co-Productions in Africa, announced this in a statement made available to TechTV Network

The three anticipated Nigerian films by some of Nigeria’s prolific filmmakers – Mo Abudu, Kunle Afolayan and Kemi Adetiba – are set to premiere on Netflix.

They include Òlòtūré, the story of a young female journalist who goes undercover as a prostitute to expose a human trafficking syndicate.

Set in Lagos, Nigeria, Òlòtūré is part of Netflix’s partnership with Mo Abudu and her production company, Ebonylife. It is directed by Kenneth Gyang, and is expected to launch globally on Oct. 2.

There is also “Citation”, directed by Kunle Afolayan and produced by Golden Effects Pictures, which will also launch globally on Nov. 6.

King of Boys II is the sequel to Kemi Adetiba’s 2018 crime thriller and which launches globally in the first half of 2021.

Amadasun says “these Netflix Original films demonstrate how we’re building a home for the best-in-class Nigerian content for our members in Nigeria and beyond.’’

Amadasun said that the Netflix Original films demonstrated how Netflix was building a home for the best-in-class Nigerian content for audiences in Nigeria and beyond.

“It is amazing to see how Nigerian films and series resonate with audiences around the world. By making it easy for people to watch films and shows from other countries, we can help them build empathy and develop a shared understanding of the world,” he said.

Meanwhile, Dorothy Ghettuba, the Lead for African Originals at Netflix, said that the new series and films were at different stages of production while others were ready to premiere.

She said that Netflix was encouraged by abundant talents in the country to work with Nigerian content providers to produce original contents for global audience.

“Netflix is proud to continue to invest in more original content from Nigeria. We are also thrilled to grow our existing creative partnerships while forming new ones. They will join people like Mo Abudu, Kemi Adetiba and Kunle Afolayan to bring more Nigerian stories onto the service.

“We look forward to partnering with the Inkblot team to bring this exciting young adult series to life. They will join the growing slate of Nigerian content on the service and debut to 193 million members in 190 countries around the world,’’ she said.

TechTV Network reports that Netflix is the world’s leading internet entertainment service with over 193 million paid memberships in over 190 countries.

  • TOP 10 NOLLYWOOD MOVIES ON NETFLIX

While staying at home due to the coronavirus pandemic isn’t something we’d ordinarily want to do, a lot of us have found creative ways to curb the boredom by creating routines and finding joys in the little things that ordinarily brought us joy before now. So whether it’s trying out new recipes on that YouTube channel or baking banana bread, all of these are valid reasons to stay busy until we’re expected to go out.

For us, one of the things that have kept us sane over time is streaming giant – Netflix. Over the past couple of months, we’ve spent time watching shows and catching up on exciting films on the platform. Before the coronavirus, Netflix had made a move to launch officially in Nigeria. According to most pundits, this move is expected to translate to the onboarding of more Nigerian content on the platform. All of this is strategic, seeing as Netflix recently rolled out two African original series – Queen Sono and Blood and Water, both set in South Africa.

Since 2015 when Kunle Afolayan’s October 1st was onboarded to Netflix, more and more Nigerian films have made their way to the platform after cinema runs, and this has become more frequent in recent months.

So TechTV Entertainment binge-watched all of the Nollywood films on Netflix and ranked the top ten:

    10. The Figurine
In Kunle Afolayan’s film, two friends find a mystical sculpture that bestows good luck for seven years but has dark consequences in the years that follow. This film is refreshing and offers a breath-taking feel of a very traditional story from a more modern lens. It features the likes of Ramsey Noauh, Omoni Oboli and Funlola Aofiyebi.

    9. October 1st
Again, Kunle Afolayan’s October 1st has been called many things, including a “masterstroke for Nollywood” by Pulse Nigeria and indeed, there’s an element of truth in it. The film, set in 1960, tells the story of a Nigerian police detective dispatched to investigate the murders of women in a small community. It stars veteran actor Sadiq Daba alongside Kehinde Bankole and a host of other stars.

    8. Lionheart
Lionheart crossed off a few firsts in the Nollywood industry – it was the first original Nigerian film by Netflix, the first film to ever be submitted for an Academy Award and the first time that the ‘Julia Roberts of Nollywood’, Genevieve Nnaji, was behind the scenes as a director. Like Genevieve, Adaeze, the film’s lead, is looking to prove her worth and steps up to the task when met with not-so-pleasant scenarios.

    7. The Wedding Party
It is not a reach to say that the Wedding Party ushered a new audience of Nigerian cinemagoers. Till today, the film holds the record for the highest-grossing film of all-time. Directed by Kemi Adetiba, this film gives you a look into everything that is the typical Nigerian wedding, offering you humour and colourful scenes to go.

    6. Phone Swap
Kunle Afolayan’s 2012 film that was originally meant to be an advertising concept is definitely on this list. This film tells the tale of two people from different walks of life who accidentally switch phones and tread in each other’s shoes. Phone Swap is fresh and exciting.

    5. King of Boys
Eniola Salami, a businesswoman and philanthropist with a checkered past is drawn into a power struggle that threatens everything she holds dear. She has to fight and prove herself to be the king of boys in a Kemi Adetiba classic that lasts for about three hours. King of Boys features Sola Sobowale and Adesua-Etomi Wellington, reuniting off their Wedding Party chemistry, as well as stars like Toni Tones, Jide Kosoko and Reminisce.

    4. 93 Days
When the deadliest infectious disease, Ebola, known to man arrives in Lagos, 21 million people are put on the edge. 93 Days chronicles the events surrounding the importation and defeat of the virus, and, in a way, pays tribute to Dr Stella Adadevoh. The film was directed by Steve Gukas and features Bimbo Akintola, Somkele Iyamah and Bimbo Manuel.

    3. Isoken
    Isoken
Jadesola Osiberu’s debut is a typical story of most Nigerian women – has a good life but her family is worried because she is unmarried. For this project, Jadesola enlists some of the finest actors to bring her concept to life. There is Dakore Egbuson, Joseph Benjamin, Funke Akindele and Damilola Adegbite all making this film a favourite any day.

    2. Kasala
In Kasala, four young men try to find a solution to a problem within 5 hours by exploring every avenue known to them. The best thing about this film is the progression of the storytelling and dare I say, it should be what a host of Nigerian films aim to be.

    1. Living In Bondage: Breaking Free (2019)
After about twenty-five years, Living In Bondage: Breaking Free is the perfect sequel to the 90s blockbuster of the same name. It is bigger, and even more flamboyant and Ramsey Nouah’s first time directing.

While diversity and representation in film have always been understood to be important, at least by some, in recent years we’ve seen that these ideas aren’t simply welcome, but can be quite successful. Audiences will pay money to see themselves represented on screen and Michelle Rodriguez says that for the Latina community, she will do whatever she needs to do to be sure that she represents that community well. Even if it means she has built a reputation in Hollywood to be difficult to work with.

In a recent appearance on EW Live on Sirium XM, Michelle Rodriguez explained that her “hard to work with” reputation on film sets has largely been a result of her willingness to, when necessary, go over people’s heads to make sure that her characters, and specifically her character of Letty in the Fast and Furious franchise, is properly represented. According to Rodriguez…

I’ve become riddled with the title hard to work with by people who have had to experience that, because sometimes I’ve had to go over people’s heads to get things done that I know have to do with the integrity of a character that I represent. My character will represent many Latina women who face machismo all the time. I have to be careful, what I do because it’s one of the only moments in a feature film where the woman isn’t on a stripper pole, where the woman isn’t a maid, or she’s not running around begging for her boyfriend to take care of her. And so that image is very important when it’s spread out around the world at the scale that Fast and Furious is.

The Fast and Furious franchise started small, but it has become an absolute phenomenon, with recent entries in the series grossing $1 billion at the global box office. Michelle Rodriguez isn’t simply representing Latina women to others in America, she’s doing it for the whole world, and she clearly understands that responsibility. She embraces it, but that means doing the work on her end to make sure Letty is handled properly, and if she gets called difficult because of it, so be it.
