GITEX NIGERIA 2026 has officially opened in Abuja, placing artificial intelligence, digital sovereignty and technology-driven economic transformation at the centre of discussions about Nigeria’s digital future.

The second edition of GITEX NIGERIA kicked off with the Government Leadership & AI Summit at the Abuja Continental Hotel, bringing together policymakers, regulators, technology leaders, investors and other key stakeholders to examine how Nigeria can strengthen its position in the emerging AI economy.

A major theme emerging from the Abuja gathering is sovereign AI the ability of Nigeria and other African countries to develop, control and deploy critical AI technologies, infrastructure and data without excessive dependence on foreign systems.

Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), warned against treating AI simply as another imported technology, stressing the importance of building Nigeria’s capacity across the entire technology stack, including connectivity, data centres, cloud infrastructure, talent and locally developed digital solutions.

The discussions come as countries across Africa seek to capture a projected US$1 trillion AI-driven economic opportunity, with Nigeria positioning itself as a major hub for digital innovation, investment and technology development.

The Abuja session also puts data and infrastructure ownership firmly on the agenda. Beyond developing AI applications, stakeholders are increasingly focused on who owns the data, computing infrastructure and systems that will power Africa’s next generation of digital services.

GITEX NIGERIA is being held from August 31 to September 3, 2026, with the Abuja leadership summit followed by the Tech Expo and Startup Festival in Lagos on September 2 and 3. The organisers describe the event as the largest tech and startup show in West Africa, with more than 750 startups expected to feature across areas including AI, fintech, healthtech, cybersecurity and other emerging technologies.

For Nigeria, the event represents more than another international technology gathering. It is emerging as a platform for forging partnerships, attracting investment and defining the policies and infrastructure required for a competitive, AI-powered digital economy.

As the conversation moves from AI adoption to AI ownership, the central question from Abuja is increasingly clear: can Nigeria move beyond being a consumer of imported technologies to becoming a creator and exporter of African digital intelligence?

Why It Matters
The decisions and partnerships emerging from GITEX NIGERIA could influence Nigeria’s approach to AI governance, digital infrastructure, data sovereignty, talent development and technology investment for years to come.
