ICT Journalists Honour Ernest Ndukwe With Lifetime Achievement Award

Veteran technology journalists and industry stakeholders have honoured former Executive Vice-Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Engineer (Dr.) Ernest Ndukwe, with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to Nigeria’s telecommunications sector and his longstanding support for professional ICT journalism.

The award was presented at the eWorldForum and Book Launch, convened by Aaron Ukodie, author and publisher of eWorldnews, bringing together veteran ICT journalists, industry leaders and stakeholders to reflect on the evolution of Nigeria’s telecommunications industry and celebrate individuals who played significant roles in its development.

Among those who joined in presenting the award were Aaron Ukodie, Convener of eWorldForum and author and publisher of eWorldnews; Don Pedro Aganbi, ICT broadcast journalist and CEO of TechTV Network; Emma Okonji, Online Editor at ThisDay; Chike Onwuegbue, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Nigerian CommunicationsWeek and Chairman of NITRA; Ken Nwogbo, Publisher of Nigerian CommunicationsWeek; and Ajibola Olude, Executive Secretary of the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON).

The award was received on behalf of Dr. Ndukwe by an official from the Corporate Affairs office of MTN Nigeria.

The citation described Dr. Ndukwe as a “regulatory statesman, institution builder, and principal architect of Nigeria’s GSM revolution,” recognising his decade-long tenure as Executive Vice-Chairman of the NCC from 2000 to 2010.

According to the citation, under his leadership, Nigeria’s telecommunications landscape expanded dramatically, moving from fewer than 500,000 telephone lines to more than 80 million active mobile subscriptions during his tenure. The transformation helped establish the foundations for the rapid growth in connectivity that followed and contributed to Nigeria’s emergence as Africa’s largest telecommunications market.

The citation also recognised Dr. Ndukwe’s emphasis on transparency, competition, innovation and sound telecommunications governance, noting that his stewardship helped reshape the sector and establish a regulatory framework whose influence extended beyond Nigeria.

A Legacy of Media Engagement
The ICT journalists also specifically acknowledged Dr. Ndukwe’s contribution to the development of professional ICT journalism and his recognition of the media as an important stakeholder in documenting and communicating the transformation of Nigeria’s telecommunications and digital economy.

Sustained engagement between the NCC and the specialist technology media became a notable feature of Dr. Ndukwe’s tenure, with the media playing an increasingly important role in reporting regulatory developments, industry growth and technological transformation.

That engagement continued under successive Executive Vice-Chairmen of the commission, making the Ndukwe era an important reference point in the evolution of Nigeria’s ICT media ecosystem.

The citation concluded by recognising Dr. Ndukwe’s “distinguished legacy of leadership, service, innovation, and nation-building,” describing his contribution as one that continues to connect nations, empower people and inspire the next generation of Africa’s digital leaders.

The Lifetime Achievement Award represents an appreciation by veteran ICT journalists and industry stakeholders not only of Dr. Ndukwe’s role during a defining period in Nigeria’s telecommunications revolution, but also of his contribution to strengthening the relationship between the regulator, industry and the media.
