Global financial services giant J.P. Morgan plans to establish a merchant bank in Nigeria before the end of 2026, a move that could strengthen corporate financing and deepen the country’s connections with international capital markets.

The proposed launch, which remains subject to regulatory approval, was announced by Dapo Olagunji, Managing Director of J.P. Morgan West Africa, during the Nigeria–Asia Financial Connectivity Dialogue in Singapore.

The dialogue was convened by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in partnership with J.P. Morgan, Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX) and FMDQ Group.

The planned merchant bank is expected to expand the financial institution’s engagement with Nigerian businesses and strengthen its participation in the country’s financial markets.

Expanding Corporate Financing Opportunities

J.P. Morgan’s proposed entry into merchant banking could create additional financing opportunities for large Nigerian businesses, particularly those seeking funding for major projects, strategic investments and complex corporate transactions.

Unlike conventional retail banking, merchant banking focuses more heavily on corporate finance, investment advisory, capital raising and other specialised financial services.

Financial analysts believe J.P. Morgan’s entry could improve access to international financing expertise and potentially connect Nigerian companies with a broader pool of global capital.

The extent of these benefits, however, will depend on the bank’s eventual operating structure, the services it offers and the scale of its Nigerian operations.

Building on an Established Nigerian Presence

J.P. Morgan has maintained a presence in Nigeria for decades, serving corporate, institutional and government clients through its financial services businesses.

According to the bank, its Lagos office provides access to services spanning asset and wealth management, as well as commercial and investment banking.

The proposed merchant banking operation would represent a further step in its engagement with Nigeria’s financial sector.

The development also follows earlier reports in 2025 that the financial institution was considering expanding its Nigerian operations beyond its representative office.

J.P. Morgan has also maintained links with Nigeria’s sovereign debt market through its government bond indices, which are closely watched by international investors assessing opportunities in emerging markets.

What the Move Means for Nigeria

The proposed expansion comes as Nigerian authorities seek to attract foreign investment, strengthen domestic capital markets and improve the country’s access to international financing.

A fully operational J.P. Morgan merchant bank could support large-scale transactions, introduce specialised financial products and deepen competition in the market for corporate banking and investment services.

However, its establishment remains contingent on securing the necessary regulatory approvals. Its actual impact will depend on how effectively the institution deploys its global expertise and financial network to support Nigerian businesses.

For Nigeria, the opportunity extends beyond the arrival of another international financial institution. It is also about attracting capital, financing productive investments and strengthening the financial infrastructure needed to support long-term economic growth.
