Tesla has unveiled a radically redesigned version of its next generation Roadster, showcasing a prototype equipped with propulsion technology developed in collaboration with SpaceX, in a demonstration that pushes the boundaries of conventional electric vehicle engineering.

The unveiling, held on October 15, 2026, at a SpaceX testing facility in McGregor, Texas, featured the electric sports car performing a series of dramatic manoeuvres, including travelling upside down along a specially constructed ramp, flipping in mid-air and landing with the aid of thrusters.

Tesla Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk presented the vehicle as a major technological milestone, highlighting the potential application of rocket-inspired propulsion systems in automotive engineering.

According to reports by CNN and TechCrunch, the demonstration involved a system combining high-powered fans and compressed-air thrusters designed to propel the vehicle during its airborne manoeuvres.

The Roadster also demonstrated extraordinary acceleration capabilities.

Tesla claimed the vehicle could accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in less than one second, although the performance figures have yet to be independently verified.

Musk said production is expected to begin in 2028, extending the timeline for a vehicle first unveiled as a prototype in 2017.

The latest demonstration has renewed interest in the long-delayed electric sports car, which Tesla has positioned as a showcase for advanced automotive technology.

However, questions remain over the vehicle’s practical flying capabilities, regulatory approval and suitability for everyday road use.

While the demonstration showed the prototype performing brief airborne manoeuvres, its ability to function as a conventional car and a fully operational flying vehicle has not yet been established.

If delivered as promised, the Roadster could represent a significant development in the convergence of electric mobility and aerospace engineering.

For now, Tesla’s unveiling offers a glimpse of a possible future in which technologies traditionally associated with rockets begin to influence the design and performance of road vehicles.

Why It Matters:

Tesla’s Roadster demonstration highlights the growing convergence between automotive engineering and aerospace technology, while raising important questions about safety, regulation and the commercial viability of flying-capable vehicles.
