The Federal Government has directed Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to purchase vehicles assembled locally in Nigeria, warning that government institutions that violate the directive could face sanctions.

The policy is aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s domestic automobile industry, promoting local manufacturing and reducing the country’s reliance on imported vehicles.

By directing public institutions to patronise local vehicle assemblers, the government is seeking to stimulate demand for locally assembled automobiles, support industrial development and encourage greater investment in the country’s automotive value chain.

The directive could also create opportunities for local assemblers, component manufacturers, automotive service providers and other businesses operating within the sector.

In addition to supporting domestic production, increased patronage of locally assembled vehicles could contribute to job creation, skills development and technology transfer, depending on the industry's capacity to expand production and meet government demand.

However, the effectiveness of the policy will depend on the availability, quality, pricing and maintenance support of locally assembled vehicles, as well as the government's ability to monitor compliance across its various institutions.

The threat of sanctions signals the government's intention to enforce the directive rather than leave compliance entirely to the discretion of individual MDAs.

For Nigeria's automotive industry, the implementation of the policy could provide a more predictable market for local assemblers and potentially strengthen the business case for expanding domestic production.

The directive also places renewed attention on the broader challenge of translating Nigeria's local-content policies into measurable industrial growth, including increased manufacturing capacity, stronger supply chains and sustainable employment.

TechTV Network will continue to monitor developments around the directive and its implications for Nigeria's automotive and manufacturing sectors.
